Hello; I enjoy your site very much. I am researching my family . My uncle Cleveland Vanderpool was sheriff of Breathitt county in the 1920s. I can't seem to find any information about him on the web, other than a reference to him in the 1920 election day shootout. I would appreciate any information or anecdotes about this colorful man . Thank you . Warren Vanderpool

I too lived in Fourseam, Hardburly and a number of other places before my parent (Johnnie and Bethel Little moved to Florida. I went to school in Fourseam and Dilce Combs (1951 and 1961) I have often wondered what happened to a lot of people I knew of. Too mention a few, Gaylene Knight, Roger Couch, Glenna Mae Campbell, Gary Combs, Mary Edna Eldridge, Sue Helfenberger, Loretta Feltner. Good Memories last a lifetime. The site is terrific.

I have never been to Hazard, but I know my biological father was buried there. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1973 or 1974. I dont even know the date so I keep coming up against a wall when I try to find out anything about my family. I dont even know if my father lived there or was just buried there. I am not sure of the spelling of his name but I think it was Dolsun Barber. If anyone knows anything PLEASE e-mail me. Even if it is just that you saw his grave marker and have a date on it. I need something to go on and right now I have nothing except where he was buried. I also had 3 sisters and 1 brother that had the same father. There names were Dolsun, Jerri jean, andy lynn and Sharon Kay Barber. If anyone knows anything about these people please e-mail me. i would greatly appreciate any help you could give Thank you and God bless you. Gina Barancin.

Have just returned from Hazard and the Black Gold Festival. Went out and watched the football game at Perry Central. I have quite a lot of relations that live around the Big Creek area and did enjoy my trip very much. Plan on being back in Hazard in the later part of April 2001. I went to Hazard High School in the 40 and 50's. Then the school was on Baker Hill but did get a nice tour of the new school. I am impressed how much the county has changed as when I lived there about all there was to the town was Main Street. Keep up the site for I go to it quite often.

I found this web site on September 05 of this year and I have spent more time on this site than any other ever. I have received mailings regarding my posting from more than twenty persons, most of them I went to high school with and had not heard from them in years. This is wonderful! I am just so sorry that I did not know of the existence of this very rewarding, and what has been I'm sure, a very time consuming labor of love. To whomever had the foresight to initiate this most enjoyable web site, I say "thank you so very much." I find myself checking for new postings each day when I check in to read my e-mail. There is one person that I would like to locate and if you are out there Billy Wayne Caudill, HHS Class of 1955, let me hear from you.. it's been a long long time.

Great Site. I am the granddaughter of Lee Combs. He was the sheriff of Jackson Ky. in the 1930's. He was married to Lillie Wells. My great-grandfather was Solly Combs. My grandfather Lee was murdered when he was sherriff. If anyone knows anything about Lee and Lillie. Please e-mail me. I would like to know more about my grandfather and great-grandfather. Lee Combs lived in Jackson and my great grandfather Solly lived in Lost Creek,Ky. I know I have family in both these areas, but I don't know where. I know nothing about my greatgrand mother who was married to Solly. I don't even know her first name or maiden. Please let me know if you know anything about them. I would really like to know who murdered my grandfather Lee. I do know that certain people had this arranged due to the way he was to vote on some issue. It would be nice to know who killed him after all these years. This was a planned murder. I know someone out there knows something. My mother was very young when this happened. Her name was Grace Combs. She had two sisters Glenna and Ruth one brother Omer. They have all passed away. I would like to here from someone who knew or knows something about them. I can't get any school or legal records since the school and court house both burnt to the ground around about the same time.

SO HAPPY to be told about this sight! It really brings back warm memories of my childhood. Although, I grew up Baltimore and never lived in Hazard, we visited relatives there every year. Over the years I lost touch with many of my relatives and as I read other notes on this page. I can't help but wonder how many of you could be my distant relatives. My grandparents had a farm in Avawam which absolutely facinated me as a child. It is where I learned that potatoes actually grew in the dirt; that eggs didn't come out of cartons and that a whistle could be made from a duck feather. Beautiful memories of the fresh clean mountain air, comforting sounds of the creek, and the love of my grandparents are still with me. I'm very proud to say that my grandparents were Tug Fields and Nora Campbell Fields and that my father was their son Herman. I welcome your emails.

Hello to the place that I love. My parents are Pearl and Claudia Bowling Hacker. My grandparents are Scott and Maggie Bailey Hacker and Claude and Oda Johnson Bowling. When I was a little girl we lived at Elkhorn; Grandpa Hacker had a store there where the road ended into the river. The house that we lived in was covered by water when they built the dam and Buckhorn Lake. We go every first week of August for the family reunion at the Buckhorn Lodge. I hope everyone that reads this knows what a wonderful place eastern Kentucky is and how proud I am to know that my heritage rests in the hills of Kentucky.

Hey to all native Hazard people near and far... I am still on a mission looking for info on a fmily that lived on Lyttle Blvd. I am the grandson of H. E. Greer & Mary Lee (Harned) Greer and the son of their daughter Bertie. If anyone can help me it would be great. I don't remember the family name all I remember is playing with the boy who lived there. Their house was on the right side of the street across from the Greer's and past the church. It was yellow brick and a brick front porch. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers this family. The last time I was there was in the early 80's and the boy was probably 10 or 11. I am enjoying seeing all the history and pictures from Hazard. Even though I didn't live there it was a part of me in my life growing up.

Hello, I live in Norwood OH., but I am from Beattyville Ky. I have been to Hazard many times. My sister married a Rudd from Allock. I think it was very near a coal camp, he was a boss at the mines at that time in the 1950s. I came to play-off high school basketball games when Lee co. was involved. This web site is the very best by far of any I have seen yet. Keep up the good work.

My grandparents lived in Walkertown and we would visit about three or four times a year. We would ride the old coal train from Cincinnati. My grandparent's names were Mary and Washington (Wash) Hughes they owned and operated the grocery store and post office in Walkertown from about 1947 to 1951. They bought the store from the Perkins'. This site sure does bring back a lot of good memories. It was in the late fifties when I was last in the Walkertown and Hazard area to visit my grandmother. I can still remember walking with my grandmother to the church just on the other side of the bridge every Wednesday night and on Sunday. My uncle and aunt Ira and Cora Johnson owned and operated the doughnut shop at the end of the bridge.
