I am responding to a insert from Debbie in Indianapolis IN. My
father's name is Harrison Neace and my grandfather's name was also
Shade Neace. My dad had a brother by the name George Neace. So I'm
guessing me and you are first cousins. Shade's wife was named
Delilah. Marion and Maggie, my dad's siblings along with his self are
still living on 15 Mile Creek at Dice Kentucky where they were born
and raised. I wished you had left your email address but maybe you'll
see this. I can't remember your dad at all but I remember a sister by
the name of Haley who lived in Middletown Ohio. d

I was born at Acup near Happy, Ky. Left there in 1954 when I joined
the Air Force. Ended up retired in Delaware. Found this site and get
homesick every time I visit it. Went to Vicco high school for two
years then to Hazel Green Academy and graduated. Would like to hear
from anyone who attended these schools between 1948 and 1952. I am
doing genealogy research on the Combs clan on Acup and would
appreciate help from anyone with like interests. This is the best

I just returned from a weekend in Hazard and what an incredibly
wonderful weekend it was! I spent many a day visiting in Hazard as a
child with my grandparents, Harry and Mary Lee Greer. I had not been
in Hazard since 1981 and I found so much change, but oh so much the
same and I was glad. My mother, Bertie Greer wanted to go home for a
visit and it was all we could have hoped it would be and more. She
saw old friends and many old sights that held warm memories. Thanks
Hazard for the warm hospitality and the web page to keep folks

One of Georgetown College's courses this Fall is called, Topics in
Sociology: Appalachian Culture. What is Appalachia? The course goes
over this question, which is hardly an easy task to define. We have
also gone over the stereotypes, misconceptions, sociological aspects,
as well as many other elements about Appalachia. I feel for the
those families which have been exploited by the large industries.

I have been reading this site all morning and find it fascinating.
I grew up in Hazard 1931 to 1951 and see a lot of familiar names.
I graduated from Hazard High in 1946. I visited for a few hours in
1998 after 46 years and was surprised to see that Hazard High is
now an apartment building. I enjoy reading all the messages and have
had contact with a couple of people one relative and one friend.

This is a GREAT WEBSITE. I discovered it through an article in the
magazine BLUE RIDGE COUNTRY. I lived in Perry County during the
"formative" years of my life, but have not visited in many years, as
I no longer have family living there. I lived in the community of
Happy. I attended the small elementary school at Happy, then later I
attended Vicco Elementary. I attended Dilce Combs Memorial High
School during the years '57-'61. I left the area to go to Berea
College. When I left Berea, I was married and have lived in North
Carolina since that time. If anyone remembers me from school, I
would love to hear from you. Hope the Website stays just as it is.
It has really made me nostalgic and more appreciative of the area in
which I spent my childhood.

I was in Hazard about six times this spring and summer and just a
few weeks ago due to the death of my Father, Jerry Williams. I was
thrilled to learn that there was a Hazard Web site and it's on my
favorites list. I was born at Indian Head, Ky just outside Hazard,
but moved to Ohio in 1963. I went to M. C. Napier in 1962-63. Of
course no matter how far you roam. Kentucky is always home. I've been
enjoying your Web site very much, and I'm hoping to come across a
picture of the one room school house at Tom's Branch School which I
attended as a child. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is a great page! My father-in-law worked for years in the Coal
Mine. My husband was born in Hazard the youngest of 8 boys, but
the family moved to Ohio when he was 9 mos. old. My mother-in-law was
born and raised in Hazard. She was Nancy Combs Collinsworth. Her
parents were Buck and Sara Noble who were also from Hazard. If anyone
can share any family ties with these names, please do as I am trying
to piece together family info. Have printed off some of the older
pictures of the town and coal mine camp to share with my father-in-
law. He is 87 and enjoys hearing about the past. He can't remember
people's names etc. so I am doing family searches to help him
remember. The pictures will surely be a hit. We plan on visiting
Hazard soon. Does anyone know anything about a cemetary called
Punchin sp? My father-in-law mentioned it so thought I would ask.
Enjoyed my visit and will be back. Great Site!

I haven't visited this site in a while, I like the changes. I live
in Fort Worth and work in Irving/Los Colinas. I heard from a lot of
cousins the last time, so I am hoping to hear from more this time. I
was born in Bulan but moved from there at a very young age. We moved
back in approx 1964, after the Beatles, and I went to a school there
but I am clueless as to the name of the school. I was in 6th grade. I
do believe the school was in Hazard, because we were bussed. - Keep
up the great work on this site!

Hi everybody, I happened to stumble onto the site while suffering
from insomnia, and spent the next hour and a half looking over my
childhood. My wife and I were both born in Hazard, she at Mountain
Mary Hospital in 1962 and myself at Appalachian Regional Hospital in
1964. While she and her family spent most of her childhood years in
other areas, they always seemed to make it back to SE Kentucky, where
her mother's family has their roots Leslie and Perry counties. Her
name is Annette Clark Coots. I was raised in Leslie County in
Yeaddiss and went to school at Hayes Lewis Elementary and Leslie
County High. Our family seemed to make it to Hazard almost every
weekend, and I spent many Friday and Saturday nights at the Family
Theater. My Saturday routine as a kid in the middle Seventies was a
trip to Don's Restaurant for a doughnut and Coke, then a stroll to
the downtown TG&Y to see if they had any new model cars. After that
I'd go by Newberry's for the same reason. I'd window-shop all the way
to the parking lot at the east end of Main Street, stopping in Rexall
Drugs to look at and buy comic books. They were a quarter apiece
back then. A three-dollar allowance which I earned, every penny
went a long way back then. My mom, Nancy Hooker Coots, and I moved
to Hazard when I was a teenager, my older sisters Wanda and Wilma
having moved there years before. My brother Jerry had moved to
Shelbyville. Some months after Mom passed away from cancer, the flood
of 1984 wiped out my home. I went to Georgia to visit my girlfriend
now wife and decided to stay. We were there for 15 years, and
recently my job took us to Connecticut. Someday we may come back.
We'll see. For now, it's great to visit anytime, day or night.
