Downtown Video: Early 1960s
Recently it was learned that a video tape exists that shows various scenes of downtown Hazard in the early 1960s. This particular copy of the tape (made from a silent 8mm movie) is owned by Sally Summers and was submitted by her daughter Margaret Noble to be included in this site.

The late Tommy Kelly shot the original film which shows many familiar faces in close-up on the crowded sidewalks and people standing in doorways of now-extinct downtown businesses.

It is estimated that the bulk of this 12 minute film was made around 1964 but there appears to be some shots taken in 1962 or earlier.

The quality is a little poor but this is a very nice visual record of life on the street during that period.

  • Slide Show of Video This first file displays the tape in a series of rapid still shots not unlike a slide show. It was necessary to present the video in this way to allow for larger and sharper images.

  • Streaming Video This version attempts to display the tape in full motion. It is much smaller than the "slide show" above yet the image can frequently appear pixilated and blurry due to the fast movements of the people. Part of how well it displays depends on the speed of your processor, modem, and internet connection. It is optimized for 33.6K modems and higher.

  • Still Photographs Here are a few stills taken from the video. View these at your leisure and to get an idea of what's on the video. Comes in handy if you are having trouble viewing the film through the other methods or if you don't want to download RealPlayer.

"Thank you very much for the video, slide show & still pics from part of Main Street, Hazard KY and the glory days of the 60's.

Seeing people that I know (and knew) is special. RE: Frank "The Pack Peddler" Ollie,  Cookie - who used to drive the lid around town,  Bud Luttrell,  Grapevine Whitaker,   Willie Dawahare,  Janice Holliday and Joyce Nichols along with Jr. Davidson,   Billy Burke Caudill and Richard McGee standing at the top of the steps of the old 8 Ball Pool Room.

Its nice to have this kind of stuff preserved and where the younger generation can see it. Thanks!!"  Richard "Big Dipper" Blount
